On Tuesday, July 28, 2009, L.A. County Sup. Gloria Molina recognized three young students from Lillian Elementary School in unincorporated Florence-Firestone, several local grocery stores, and the San Gabriel Valley Conservation Corps for their outstanding participation in the First District’s “Green Bag for a Clean Earth” program. Sup. Molina joined Heal the Bay, the County’s Dept. of Public Works, and Fox ol to launch the Reusable Canvas Bag Initiative—a?Sports en Espan program that taught children the importance of replacing single-use plastic bags that pollute our rivers and overload landfills with reusable ones—at Lillian Elementary School on Wednesday, February 4, 2009. Sup. Molina distributed “Green Bag for a Green Earth” canvas bags to all of the students and introduced her “Reduce, Recycle, Reuse” card—a contest where students collect stickers every time they or their parent shops with the reusable bag. The participating four schools—including the kids and their families—as well as program sponsors and local grocery stores joined together and successfully replaced 4,000 plastic bags with reusable bags. Sup. Molina congratulated the top three contest winners from Lillian Elementary School: Dylan Mayorga, Rogelio Viera, and Karla Sanchez. Also recognized were representatives from the sponsors: El Super grocery store, Superior Grocers, Fox Sports en Español, Heal the Bay, Brag About Your Bay Team, the Southern California Gas Company, Southern California Edison, AT&T, the L.A. Dodgers, and Walt Disney.
