On Tuesday, July 7, 2009, L.A. County Sup. Gloria Molina and the First District Office hosted a breakfast reception celebrating the success of the First District’s Foster Care Education Pilot Program. Ninety foster youth participants were recognized for their hard work improving their grades. Nineteen student participants were honored for graduating from high school this past June. By collaborating with the County’s Dept. of Children and Family Services, the Chief Executive Office, and the Pomona and Montebello Unified School Districts, along with Casey Family Programs and the L.A. County Education Coordination Council, Sup. Gloria Molina created tools to assess where the youth stood educationally then developed a solid plan to address all of their needs. The plan revealed that often in the process of foster kids moving from home to home and school to school, credits for classes they had passed were lost! This program directed social workers’ attention to this problem—thus finding and restoring all lost credits which enabled students to graduate faster. The pilot program also strengthened the relationships between the Dept. of Children and Family Services and the school districts. Later that morning, Sup. Gloria Molina acknowledged the dedicated team who helped to make the First District Education Pilot Program a great success at the Board of Supervisors meeting.
