On Tuesday, June 9, 2009, L.A. County Sup. Gloria Molina and the Board of Supervisors named preschool teacher Maria Leon from Pueblo Preschool in Pomona “Teacher of the Year.” Maria began her career in 1989 aiding teachers at Barfield Elementary School in Pomona and in 1993, after attending Mt. San Antonio College, she rejoined Barfield Elementary school as a teacher. Upon joining the Head Start/State Preschool Program at Roosevelt Elementary School, Mrs. Leon was asked to participate in a pilot program later known as Los Angeles Universal Preschool. Maria Leon is an inspiration to all teachers across the county and we admire her exemplary dedication to her students.
