On Wednesday, October 24, 2007, L.A. County Sup. Gloria Molina provided welcoming remarks to approximately 200 mental health providers and advocates at a Mental Health Community Forum sponsored by the county’s Dept. of Mental Health. The symposium offered attendees the opportunity to learn how they could participate in implementing the Mental Health Services Act—also known as Proposition 63. This $750 million per year initiative finally will allow Californians to fulfill a promise made to the mental health community in the 1960s of providing services in a community-based rather than a hospital-based system by utilizing a key ingredient lacking a generation ago—adequate funding.
